Japan's domestic cement demand has been declining for four consecutive years, with a slight narrowing in the decline in 2022.
According to data from the Japan Cement Association, in 2022, Japan produced a total of 48.4729 million tons of cement, with a domestic cement demand of 37.4 million tons, including official demand of 16.6 million tons, civilian demand of 20.8 million tons, and export volume of 9.569 million tons (export clinker of 4.7341 million tons). Japan's domestic cement demand has been declining for four consecutive years, with a slight narrowing in the decline in 2022. According to the forecast of Japan Cement Association, in 2023, driven by domestic urban reconstruction and civil office building construction, the domestic cement demand is expected to be 38 million tons, with a year-on-year growth of 1.6%.
In terms of cement prices, companies such as Pacific Cement, Mitsubishi Cement, and Osaka Cement began to increase prices in January and February. Affected by the Russo-Ukrainian War, the global coal price rose, coupled with the rapid depreciation of the yen, and the cement cost continued to rise. In September and October, cement enterprises again raised the cement price, which rose by 3000~3300 yen/ton. In March 2023, the cement price reached 13000 yen/ton (equivalent to 680 yuan/ton).
